Hudson Gimenez - Romance Nº 1

My review:       Romance Nº 1   is a piece in three sections, with an accompanied melody texture and a tranquil tempo, creating an atmosphere of calm and reflection. The thematic unity and the constant accompaniment of arpeggios give the piece a sense of cohesion, with a second development section and a third recapitulation section. In fact, it is constructed from a harmonic progression (accompaniment) upon which small variations on the main theme melody are layered.       Gimenez's social links:           Facebook      YouTube      SoundCloud     Enjoy  "Romance Nº 1" ,  performed by Carlos Marín Trigo:

Luc Roger Martin - Calypso

Calypso is the second of the five pieces that make up Luc Roger Martin's Caribbean Suite.

In this piece, we can distinguish a tripartite form (A-B-A), although the second section is taken from the main melody that serves as the theme for section A. Thus, the criteria we use to define section B is not based on thematic material, but rather the texture the composer is using, for in section A (and its repetition) Martin uses a bass accompaniment and syncopated chords, while in section B, in which the melody appears in the high register of the piano, there is no such accompaniment. If anything, a timid counterpoint.

The Caribbean Suite is one of Luc Roger Martin's best-known piano works. Inspired by a trip the composer made to the island of Jamaica, it is intended to be a set of intermediate level studies for piano, with the aim of making his students lose their fear of syncopated rhythms.

Originally from Eastern Ontario, Mr. Martin studied music composition at the University of Ottawa with Steven Gellman and John Armstrong. Mr. Martin graduated with a Master's degree in music composition in 2004.
